Besides being a development cart. the VecFever also can be used as a multicart. – it uses 16MB (Mark I), 64MB (Mark II) or 128MB (Mark II w/ RAID setup) of flash memory and if it starts up not powered by a Vectrex it comes up in a usb disk mode with a FAT32-formatted volume. Everything copied onto it (including sub directories) are accessible on the Vectrex side via the built-in file browser and mounted under ‘Files/’.
The menu operation is straightforward – button 4: to select/start something, 1: to cancel or go up a level and on the uppermost main page of the browser 1: will switch to the options page (and 1: on options back again). After starting a Vectrex. cart. pressing the reset button brings back the menu. For most native applications and everything on the main page pressing ‘2:’ will enter their options – for 6809 cart. 2: shows the high score table (if for the cart. a high score patch exists).
The exact capabilities needed for Vectrex cartridges can usually be detected upon loading binaries but it also supports a container file format (v4e) which besides using compression defines the necessary cartridge hw. and is used for cart. with more than the normal two banks.
The firmware can be updated (also changed to a previous one) by starting a firmware update cartridge via the menu and the firmware is unified for all variants of VecFever.
